The London ultra-very low emission zone (ULEZ) is a “blunt instrument” that really should be replaced with smarter incentives that reward people today for selecting inexperienced transportation alternatives, an air pollution professional has explained to the London Assembly.
Simon Birkett, founder and director of Clean up Air in London, instructed the Assembly that he and Isabel Dedring – former deputy London mayor for transport underneath Boris Johnson – had drawn up a strategy for “vehicles to pay out different amounts depending on the time of working day, where they are, and the excellent and amount of the fuel they burn”.
Birkett suggests incentivising folks to stroll or cycle, arguing that schemes these types of as ULEZ and the congestion cost are “primitive” in the way they cost motorists for driving “100 yards into a zone”.
City Hall has stated it will look into changing the capital’s existing charging zones by 2030, but MyLondon reports that Birkett thinks this could be completed faster.
“I’d like to get a commitment from the mayor to introduce a greater, more powerful, fairer, smarter plan. The attractiveness of it is that you could in fact pay persons to walk or cycle,” he claimed.
Dr Ian Mudway from Imperial Higher education London not only seconded Birkett and Dedring’s prepare, but called for it to be expanded to a nationwide level.
